Within a decade Hazlitt ranked with Coleridge as literary critic as a result of both spoken and written essays. His lecture series was very popular. The series LECTURES ON THE ENGLISH POETS was given early in 1818; ENGLISH COMIC WRITERS was delivered late that year.

Originally appearing in English periodicals, mostly The New Monthly Magazine in 1824, the essays were collected with several others written for the purpose and published in book form in 1825. The Spirit of the Age was one of Hazlitt's most successful books.

William Hazlitt took up the writing of essay professionals and was serious about it. He was also a printer, a lecturer, and a biographer but essentially he was an essayist, a great essayist. The outstanding feature of his essays was that like Bacon, he wrote on a variety of subject and themes.
Hazlitt was educated at the Unitarian New College in Hackney, then studied art and tried to earn a living as a portrait painter. He was also keenly interested in philosophy and published his first book, An Essay on the Principles of Human Action, in 1805. He later became a journalist and theatre critic.

The same notion is expressed differently by William Hazlitt in his essay “On Wit and Humour’’ in English Comic Writers (1819). He says, “Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps; for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are, and what they ought to be” (1).

William Hazlitt was an English writer, remembered for his humanistic essays and literary criticism, and as a grammarian and philosopher. He is now considered one of the great critics and essayists of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell, but his work is currently little-read and mostly out of print.
William Hazlitt, The Spirit of the Age. Grasmere: The Wordsworth Trust, 2004 This appears to be the only paperback edition of Hazlitt's greatest work currently in print. It is lavishly illustrated with portraits of the various people described by Hazlitt, and is prefaced with an essay by Robert Woof, director of the Wordsworth Trust.
